Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has revealed the abrupt end to his professional career and failing to represent Nigeria at a major tournament still hurts.
Ikeme, 40, was in the peak of his career back in 2017 when doctors diagnosed the goalkeeper with Leukaemia.
On 6 July 2017, Wolverhampton Wanderers announced that Ikeme had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia after returning abnormal blood tests during a routine pre-season check-up.
He immediately proceeded on getting treatment, but the chances of returning to the sport even after successfully beating the disease was ruled out.
Carl Ikeme had earned his first International cap in 2015, stepping in the void after Vincent Enyeama had also suddenly retired from the National team.
Ten caps in that short spate was the number of games he managed to rack up, playing the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.
Pain and Regret
Speaking on his brief International football journey, Ikeme described it as a painful reminder.
‘My regret in my football career is not representing Nigeria more and not going to major competitions with the team.
‘I should have been at the World Cup, unfortunately we know why I could not make it.’
‘It has always been that thing in me, I have no regrets about football but that is the only thing that burns me,’ he concluded.

Cark Ikeme made 207 appearances across all competitions for Wolves. He was part of their teams that won the Championship in 2009 and League One in 2014, and made one Premier League appearance in 2012.
After his treatment for Leukaemia, Ikeme retired in 2018 despite announcing that he was in “complete remission” after “a tough year and intense chemotherapy”.
Wolves agreed, in honor of the Sutton Coldfield-born goalkeeper’s, to to pull his jersey number 1 from the squad that season.
