Nigerian international Chibuike Nwaiwu found the back of the net as Trabzonspor cruised to an emphatic 3–0 triumph over Samsunspor at the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium on Saturday.

Returning straight to club action following national team duty, the defender was immediately restored to the starting XI. While Samsunspor entered the clash desperate to snap a five-game winless streak, Trabzonspor dismantled the hosts with relative ease in what was initially expected to be a demanding away test.

Ernest Muçi broke the deadlock in the 28th minute before Nwaiwu doubled the advantage 11 minutes later. The 23-year-old reacted sharpest to a loose ball within the six-yard box, sending a lethal finish into the top-right corner. Dju Franculino struck again in the 40th minute, putting the result beyond doubt before the interval.

Trabzonspor’s task became more complicated when Melih Kabasakal was sent off in the 43rd minute. Nevertheless, the visitors showed immense discipline with ten men, thwarting Samsunspor’s attacks to ensure their clean sheet remained intact.

Nwaiwu was the anchor of that impenetrable backline, delivering a standout performance across the pitch. The Nigerian recorded 15 defensive actions, came out on top in five of his six duels, registered a key pass, and amassed 72 touches, earning a match-high 8.5 rating on Sofascore.

His authoritative outing served as a direct statement following his recent frustration with the Super Eagles. Although named in Eric Chelle’s 24-man roster for Nigeria’s 2027 AFCON qualification matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, Nwaiwu remained an unused substitute throughout both games.

Chelle opted for a partnership of Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, despite the latter enduring a difficult outing against Guinea-Bissau that saw Nigeria concede three times. In hindsight, Nwaiwu’s poise could have fortified the team’s rearguard, particularly given his extensive experience with uneven turf from his days in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Ultimately, Nwaiwu’s decisive showing on Saturday proved that he offers both commanding defensive security and a genuine goal threat inside the opposition box—opening his goal tally for the season in style.
