Bayer Leverkusen sporting managing director Simon Rolfes has issued a gentle caution to Victor Boniface following the Nigerian international’s petulant reaction during the club’s thrilling 4-3 Bundesliga triumph against Mainz.

The forward’s exasperation reached a boiling point late in the contest. With manager Carles Martínez utilizing his remaining substitutions in the 84th minute to bring on Equi Fernández and Jonas Hofmann, Boniface realized he would not be taking the pitch. Rather than rejoining his fellow reserves—such as Loïc Badé and Lucas Vázquez—on the sidelines, the attacker marched straight down the tunnel to the locker room.

Opportunities have been scarce for Boniface throughout the current Bundesliga campaign. His only league minutes came as a brief five-minute cameo during a 3-2 defeat to SV Elversberg in the season opener. Although he set up Christian Kofane’s strike during that fleeting appearance, it failed to earn him sustained playing time. Martínez subsequently left him as an unused substitute against Union Berlin, RB Leipzig, and Mainz, while completely omitting him from the matchday roster that took on Augsburg in mid-September.

Addressing the post-match drama, Martínez confessed he was oblivious to the striker’s abrupt departure at the time. The tactician noted that he would address the matter directly with the player, remarking that while an athlete’s eagerness to feature is understandable, tactical rotation and benching remain an inescapable aspect of the sport.

Rolfes took a measured approach to the controversy, initially quipping that the striker might have simply rushed off for an urgent restroom break. Nevertheless, the sporting chief made it abundantly clear that such behavior would not be tolerated moving forward, stating firmly that walking off prematurely should not occur again.

At the same time, Rolfes commended Boniface for his resilience and professional demeanor over a testing 12-month period. He highlighted the forward’s steadily improving fitness levels and positive locker-room presence, explaining that while emotional reactions are natural, they must never compromise team unity. The executive reiterated his preference for handling such minor missteps through open, internal conversations.

With fellow forward Christian Kofane sidelined by injury, Boniface remains eager to showcase his talents. That breakthrough could arrive soon, as Martínez hinted at expanding the Nigerian’s role ahead of Leverkusen’s upcoming Europa League encounter against Lech Poznań in Poland.
